the in’s and out’s of tattoo recovery

Choosing your first or next tattoo is always exciting, for some meticulous and well thought out, for others it’s spontaneous. Regardless of your path, tattoo aftercare is incredibly important. Taking good care of them both during the healing process and for the many years afterwards is imperative. Without this consideration this can lead to all sorts of potential issues - blurred or blown-out linework, extreme fading, or worse infection, leaving you with a need for a touch-up appointment or potentially even laser removal.

Less is definitely more when it comes to tattoo aftercare. You should give the tattoo about a day and a half to breathe. People think they have to actively try to heal their tattoos with antibacterial creams or products with a lot of ingredients. Let nature do its thing, and let it heal on its own. Give your tattoo ample oxygen and leave it be—the less you do, the better it’ll heal.

We are often wanting to show off our newest tattoo as soon as we get it, but caution sharing too soon. Once you remove the dressing, it’s important to keep the area clean. We recommend a simple fragrance-free soap like our Gentle Cleansing Soap Set, a unique coconut oil based soap that delivers gentle & effective cleansing. With clean hands lightly scrub the surrounding area. We cannot stress enough the importance of cleaning your hands beforehand. Touching your tattoo with unclean hands can lead to an infection, especially during the early days of the healing process.

Once you’ve gently pat dry your fresh tattoo it’s important to keep it hydrated but we recommend staying away from all petroleum based products- this will clog the pores and potentially risk your new tattoo for infection. We also recommend staying away from your body cream, typical hand creams, or anything you might consider otherwise. Stick to a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer treatment. We recommend our after/care moisturizer - it’s clean, simple ingredients like shea butter, chamomile, and sesame seed oil gently soothe and calm freshly tattooed skin while also protecting the natural skin barrier. Combined with our innovative water break technology encapsulates and removes excess water while maintaining optimal hydration of the skin. This is achieved by encapsulating large amounts of water within a skin-similar matrix. When the product is applied to the skin, the matrix collapses, forcing water out into the upper epidermis. At the same time, the collapsed matrix develops an occlusive layer, which traps moisture into the skin. These steps are best repeated for ultimate healing up to 14 days from initial tattoo.

Post Initial Tattoo Care- Similar to taking care of your skin or face, tattoo care is ongoing in order to maintain the life of your new ink. Keeping your skin moisturized and protected with sunscreen is best for your tattoo and overall skin for the long term. Try our Revitalizing Body Moisturizer, which is ultra lightweight, fragrance-free and provides optimal hydration for even the driest, chapped skin from sensitive to tattooed skin. Green Tea soothes and rejuvenates, while helping protect against environmental stressors. Ceramides help create a protective barrier that locks in moisture to the skin, helping to improve skin texture and tone. Formulated with our unique color lift technology to enhance and rejuvenate tattoos and can be used at any life stage after the initial recovery has taken place. Balance your time in the sun as over exposure can lead to fading, discoloration, and blurring and always wear a SPF to improve the longevity of your tattoos.
