skin essential - ceramides
When developing our Revitalizing Body Moisturizer it was so critical to us to formulate a moisturizer that would be extra soothing and hydrating, but also extremely lightweight at the same time. With sensitive and tattooed skin in mind, our moisturizer also provides skin barrier support that locks moisture into the skin, improving skin's texture and tone.
What is a skin barrier and why is this important you ask?
Skin is your largest organ. Skin is made up of layers, each which performs different functions to protect the body. The outermost layer, often described as the brick wall. It consists of tough skin cells called corneocytes that are bound together by mortar-like lipids. This is your skin barrier.
Inside your skin cells, you’ll find keratin and natural moisturizers including cholesterol, fatty acids, and ceramides. Additionally, the skin barrier keeps out harmful environmental stressors that could impact your body, while also keeping your body hydrated by trapping water and hydrators inside. Essentially your skin barrier is critical for good health and needs to be protected in order to support your internal health.
What is a ceramide and why is this important for my skin barrier?
Ceramides are waxy lipids found in especially high concentrations in the outermost layer. They are critical in protecting your skin barrier. Ceramides help “bind” skin together by forming a protective layer that helps lock in moisture and protects against environmental stressors.
In addition, ceramides, more impactful than even some of the major anti-aging skincare treatments -retinol, peptides, etc. by helping support skin’s dynamic nature, leaving skin plumper, smoother, firmer-feeling skin with fewer visible lines and wrinkles.
